Is this your skin issue?
- Have you noticed more small or even large brown spots developing on your face?
- Do you have large patches of uneven brown discoloration that get darker over the summer?
What Causes Brown Spots
Blotchy brown spots develop on the skin for several reasons. Sun exposure over time, certain medications (such as estrogen and other hormones), genetics alone–all contribute to the brown spots and sun spots. Generally, a brown spot is a focal area of either a higher number of pigment cells (called “melanocytes”) or an increased number of pigment molecules (called “melanin”) located within the melanocyte.
Some excess melanin resides in your your top layer of skin, or epidermis. Some excess melanin is deeper, in the dermis. Thus, brown spots are really a diverse group of skin issues; different types of increased pigmentation require different lightening treatments.
The Solution: Brown Spot Removal Treatments
Lasers and Intense Pulsed Light devices remove brown spots and patches from the skin by selectively targeting the melanin and melanocyte, leaving the other cells in the skin untouched. This unique feature is why these procedures are the safest and most effective treatment choice for removing brown sun damage spots from the skin.
1. Laser Treatment
Lasers are a medical device which have changed and dramatically advanced the way we treat skin issues. The definition of a laser can help you better understand why your laser procedure is so safe and effective. Lasers are unique light emitting devices which give off a single very specific wavelength of light-targeted to eliminate one issue or problem. Certain lasers have been designed to just remove brown spots; these devices break up the excess melanin causing the discolorations.
The treatment is a quick office-based procedure and requires no anesthesia. Generally 1-2 sessions give the best results.
2- Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photo Rejuvenation
IPL is an abbreviation for “Intense Pulsed Light”. The IPL device was created to treat combinations of skin issues, versus lasers treat just one skin target. The definition of an IPL can help you better understand why the IPL can best treat your combination of skin concerns.
The goal of a series of IPL treatments is to make your skin more evenly colored, by decreasing the irregular brownish and reddish areas that you have developed as a result of aging and sun damage. In addition, IPL brightens the skin and gives it a more youthful glow.
An IPL machine works by delivering a broad range of colors of light at the same time, to treat multiple skin conditions occurring in larger areas. Filters are then used to selectively deliver light in various wavelengths. Different wavelengths of light are delivered to different layers (and depths) of the skin. So our IPL machine allows Dr. Mohsin to choose the best setting and wavelength for targeting your specific skin conditions.
The wand is moved over the entire treatment site, and thus lightens the sun damage across the whole area, not just targeting
focal sunspots. In this manner, IPL treatments can effectively decrease diffuse brown pigmentation and blotchy redness – on the face, neck, chest, arms, and legs.
These treatments are usually completed in 15 to 30 minutes. There are no needles; no anesthesia is needed. The skin be red for a few hours and feel like a mild sunburn, but you can resume your daily activities immediately after – no downtime is required.
Over the course of the next 1 to 3 weeks, the brown spots that were treated may darken, then fade and flake off. After completing a series of 4 treatments spaced at 1-month intervals, you will see noticeable improvements in your skin’s red and brown discolorations, texture, and and overall appearance.
3. Other Brown Spot Removal Treatment Options
Treatments used to smooth the texture of the skin (“skin resurfacing”) also decrease brown spots. Each of these treatments focuses on different combinations of skin issues. Some work for more superficial freckles. Others are more effective for deeper pigment like melasma or deeper sun damage. Certain devices reduce brown and red while others lighten brown spots and smooth skin texture.
